Montour Trail Council seeks $3.25M to repair closed tunnel in Cecil Township

Ned Williams of the Montour Trail Council told the board that the National Tunnel—located roughly at mile 25 on the trail through Cecil Township—has been closed because of structural issues and needs an estimated $3,250,000 to repair. Williams said fundraising and grant efforts have begun and that the council has had "early successes with foundations and some grant applications in." He said the group plans to apply for Local Share Account grants in October and hopes to begin construction next spring with reopening before the end of the following year.
Williams said the tunnel closure effectively splits the 50‑mile trail in half and that the council will continue fundraising and coordinating with township and regional partners. He thanked township police for assisting trail users and suggested Peters Township's recently passed e‑bike ordinance could serve as a model for local policy.
