Montour Trail Council seeks $3.25M to repair closed tunnel; grant push planned

Ned Williams of the Montour Trail Council updated the board on the National Tunnel closure, saying the structure "developed some issues" that required closure and that repair will be a major project. "It's gonna be about a $3,250,000 effort to fix it," Williams said, and the council has begun fundraising and submitted early grant applications to foundations.
Williams said the council plans to pursue Local Share Account grants this fall (applications due in October) as part of a funding strategy. If grant and foundation fundraising succeed, he said construction could begin in the spring with the goal of reopening the tunnel before the end of next year. He thanked police and staff for support in keeping detours and trail users safe while the closure is in place.
