Sanitarian recounted a citizen complaint about a feral-cat colony exceeding 50 animals in a riverside community and described department outreach and mitigation steps.
"There is a colony of cats that is over 50 that a person is feeding and it's causing lots of trouble in the community," the sanitarian said, adding that employees visited the property, engaged the owner and coordinated with Driftless Humane Society to provide assistance. The sanitarian described tactics such as removing food and shelter to reduce the colony over time. (Speakers: Sanitarian; Director.)
Board members discussed animal health risks, vaccination gaps and the potential for neighbor complaints; staff said the town may consider an ordinance or resolution to discourage feeding in public areas. No formal county ordinance action was taken at the meeting.
Why it matters: Large feral-animal colonies can create public-health and nuisance issues; the department's outreach and partnership with a humane society aim to reduce risk while the town evaluates regulatory options.
