The Berkeley County Schools Board of Education approved the autism classroom workforce initiative after hearing a detailed presentation from the superintendent and staff. The initiative pairs an assignment-based salary supplement for eligible teachers with investments in recruitment, professional learning, instructional coaching, mentoring and grow‑your‑own pathways designed to address a documented shortage of certified autism classroom teachers.
Under the adopted structure teachers with 0–3 years of total teaching experience in autism classrooms would receive a $3,000 annual assignment supplement and teachers with four or more years of total experience would receive a $6,000 annual assignment supplement, each in addition to the district’s 3‑step pay increase. The superintendent said initial first‑year funding will come from organizational efficiencies and attrition of some district-level positions; long‑term budgeting will be necessary to sustain the line item. The motion to approve carried by voice vote.
