Campus supervisor and union warn cuts to classified staff would harm student safety

During the public-comment period Emily Kasmeier, a campus supervisor at Coyote Valley, urged trustees to rethink a proposed deficit-elimination plan that would eliminate campus supervisors and other classified positions. She described daily duties including logging behavioral incidents, communicating with families, supervising bus lines and providing social-emotional interventions. "It feels as though a qualified budget is taking precedence over the safety of NUSD students," Kasmeier said, asking the board to reconsider the proposal.

A CSEA representative, Jennifer Hitzen, reported that proposed reductions for the 2025—26 plan include elimination of three full-time custodians, a technology assistant position, a translator position, nine instructional aides and three campus supervisors. She reminded the board that earlier cuts had already affected 26 classified positions and that further reductions would continue to place burden on remaining staff.

Board members acknowledged the concerns and said the budget workshop schedule and additional analysis will provide opportunities to explore alternatives before reductions are finalized for implementation at the end of the fiscal year if layoffs proceed.
