Garland names Jeff Bridal assistant city manager; mayor appoints Scott Bornberg as interim police chief

Mayor Dylan Hedrick announced the appointment of Jeffrey Bridal as Garland’s assistant city manager and introduced Scott Bornberg as his appointee for interim police chief, asking council to examine and confirm the selection at the next regular meeting.

Hedrick highlighted Bridal’s law‑enforcement background and multi‑decade service to Garland, calling him “one of our most trusted senior leaders here in the city, during my tenure here.” Bridal, who spent more than 30 years with the Garland Police Department and served 7½ years as chief, said the transition to a civilian role feels “strange” and introduced Bornberg, who has served on the Garland force for roughly 33 years and as assistant chief for the past 7½ years.

Bornberg outlined his top priorities, saying the department will “definitely be following the same path we’ve been taking” under the prior chief, and emphasizing three themes: strengthening community relations, investing in technology as a force multiplier, and continuing local crime‑fighting efforts. Hedrick said he will formally ask council to confirm Bornberg “tomorrow night” under the city charter and Chapter 143 of the Texas Local Government Code.

Council members offered congratulations and asked brief questions about how to support the transition; the mayor said tonight’s remarks were intended to allow council an opportunity to ask questions before making a confirmation decision at the next meeting.
