District staff presented the district-wide outdoor education program and educators described program goals, activities and logistics, including plans to send all three elementary schools to the same camp next year.
Dr. Bradley (introduced to the board as "Doctor Bradley") described Camp Timberlyin East Troy, Wisconsin, explaining the trip schedule (leave early day 1, two overnights, return day 3) and a range of activities from canoeing and archery to night hikes and ziplining. "Outdoor education is a very long time tradition in this district, going up to Camp Timberly in, East Troy, Wisconsin," Dr. Bradley said, framing the trip as both an instructional and social-emotional learning experience. Students who attended appeared on the meeting record and one student said, "My favorite was the night hike because I loved, like, walking through the night when it was all pitch black and a flashlight sounded everywhere."
Dr. Bradley and other staff emphasized that teachers, social workers and special education staff attend trips; families pay a per-student fee (the presenter said families are paying $131 with fee waivers for students who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch) and the district is exploring partial-participation accommodations for students with special needs. Board members asked about capacity and frequency; Dr. Bradley described the two-night/three-day model as the "sweet spot" and said the district takes all fifth-graders while exploring ways to include students who need modified participation.
