The New Durham Select Board on Monday approved a motion to name an unnamed access road leading to Shaw Pond Boat Ramp "Beach Street," a change a resident said is required to qualify for a state stormwater grant.
During a public hearing, a resident identified as Marie told the board she reviewed old deeds and found references to "Beach Street," and that both the police and fire chiefs advised that a single‑word road name that does not resemble another municipality is required for grant and 911 purposes. "In order for me to get a grant to work on correcting the stormwater problem on Shaw Pond Boat Ramp... it has to be named," Marie said.
Board member speaker 2 moved to adopt the name and the board approved the motion by voice vote recorded as 3–0. The board directed staff (Stephanie) to send the fire chief's letter and required documentation to 911 and to coordinate with the Department of Public Works and Judy Perinton to procure and install signage.
Marie emphasized the town must accept maintenance responsibility for the road to meet grant conditions and to protect newly installed stormwater mitigation features. The board agreed to investigate maintenance history and whether the planning board should be consulted about road classification before final administrative steps.
Next steps noted by the board include submitting the adopted name to the appropriate regional agencies for 911/dispatch records and confirming the town department that will assume maintenance.
