Town Manager Adam Mitchell briefed the board on operational and project updates, including the rescission of Stage 1 water restrictions effective the day of the meeting and progress across several transportation and parks projects.
Mitchell said Stage 1 water restrictions were rescinded in concert with partner providers and called out multiple project milestones: Judd and Bridal project punch-list work, downtown Varina pedestrian improvements with sidewalk delays due to utility conflicts, Austin Ridge Greenway paving scheduled for next week with a target opening in early September, and various intersection operational improvements pending final NCDOT and FHWA approvals. He also noted the town's engineering department had processed more than 120 encroachment submittals for fiber installations in 2026 to date.
Mitchell highlighted Parks & Recreation and Fire Department updates: a year-over-year participation increase in fall youth sports and the relaunch of the junior firefighter program with 18 candidates competing for 15 slots. He listed several upcoming community events, including National Night Out on Aug. 21 and the International Cultural Festival on Sept. 12.
