Planning Commission reviews five proposed economic development priorities

On Aug. 3, 2026, the Monroe Planning Commission reviewed five proposed economic development priorities offered by the Economic Development Committee intended to align the city's goals with the regional Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy.
Staff described the priorities as Business Development; Infrastructure Redundancy and Resiliency; Housing and Transportation; Event Destination Development; and Pre-Disaster Planning. Commissioners focused discussion on how the priorities would help the city compete for grants and infrastructure funding and on the trade-offs between preserving Monroe as a primarily residential community and encouraging additional commercial growth.
Commissioners raised parking as a cross-cutting concern that affects many of the priorities and urged staff to revisit the priority order, refine terminology, and explicitly include public amenities in the housing and transportation category before the package advances to City Council. No motions or votes were taken.
