Board approves $151,455 contract to close Wilbur Jones Road at-grade railroad crossing

The Town Board authorized a $151,455 contract with Pecos Construction Company Inc. to permanently close the Wilbur Jones Road at-grade railroad crossing, install turnarounds and guardrail, and add pavement markings and signing.
Engineering Director Pollan told the board the work supports the NCDOT U-5751 project (NC 55 extension) and is funded from Northeast District Capital Reserve Funds. "For every new grade crossing you get, you have to close two," Pollan explained in response to a commissioner question about the process. The project is expected to be completed within a few months.
Commissioner Haynes moved to approve the budget amendment (BA 2701) and associated project ordinance amendment POA 2701 and to authorize the town manager to enter a contract with Pecos Construction; the motion was seconded and carried by voice vote.
Pollan said the closure had been planned in early phases of the 55 Bypass design and noted coordination with Norfolk Southern and NCDOT on future crossings.
