Canajoharie board approves triple-fee penalty for unpermitted construction; public nuisance law proposed

Code Enforcer Keith Fergusson reported seven permits issued and six inspections performed in the past month and presented a proposed permit fee schedule. The board unanimously approved a penalty that adds three times the original permit fee to a homeowner’s property tax when construction is done without the required permit.
Fergusson also asked the board to consider a Public Nuisance Law allowing the town to remediate neglected properties and place cleanup costs on the property owner’s tax bill. The board did not adopt that law at the meeting; Fergusson said the change would give the town a mechanism to address persistent property neglect while recouping cleanup costs.
