Roanoke County readies eight Smart Scale transportation grant applications

Roanoke County supervisors heard an update on Smart Scale transportation grant applications that will be filed by Aug. 1.
A supervisor (speaker 26) said staff and a Commonwealth Transportation Board representative toured eight candidate projects and that four will be filed directly by Roanoke County while four more will be filed by the Roanoke Valley Transportation Planning Organization on the county’s behalf. Projects highlighted included transit access and pedestrian-safety improvements on Hershberger Road to Highlands Road, safety improvements at Route 419 and Colonial Avenue, and corridor improvements on Peters Creek Road and Airport Road.
The supervisor noted that scoring for the Smart Scale program is competitive and that results will be released in January; if a project falls short of the cutoff, staff may pursue political support from Commonwealth Transportation Board members. "We'll find out in January of next year how we fared on these eight projects," the supervisor said.
