Director Barber summarized the Child Care Task Force’s findings and asked the council for direction on priorities. Staff reported a $25,000 grant won to explore a child-care tax credit and described partnerships with the City University Partnership on a prenatal-to‑3 impact lab and a plan to expand surveys of families.
"The grant is $25,000 for the city to explore how we might offer a child care tax credit to residents," Director Barber said. Councilmembers applauded the grant and suggested immediate next steps: create a public provider directory or info hub, consider subsidized loans or startup grants for home-based providers, and schedule a work session to refine program design ahead of the budget cycle.
Councilmembers emphasized pairing supply expansion with affordability measures and recommended inviting state licensing officials to a work session to clarify home-care licensing costs and requirements. Staff said it will return with more concrete recommendations and any needed budget requests before the FY28 process.
