Anne Rogers, section 106 coordinator for the Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League, told the Roanoke County Board of Supervisors during citizens' comments that two contiguous rural historic districts on Bent Mountain have been documented and found eligible by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources.
"The result of our work has been the identification of 2 rural historic districts on Bent Mountain, which have been found to be eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources," Rogers said, describing years of community surveying, mapping and collaboration with the department's senior architectural historian. She asked the board to support three next steps: (1) pursue National Register nominations for the Coles Terry Bridal Historic District and the Bent Mountain Apple Orchard Rural Historic District, (2) obtain recognition from Mountain Valley Pipeline LLC that the Swan Compressor Station Alternative Site 4 is located inside the Bent Mountain Apple Orchard Rural Historic District, and (3) seek the board’s formal support for outreach and preservation actions.
Rogers submitted documentation to the clerk and named several local collaborators who helped with research and mapping. Chair Shepherd closed the public-comment time after Rogers' three-minute allotment ended; no immediate board action on the request was taken at the meeting.
