The Roanoke County Board of Supervisors voted July 14 to remove proffered conditions on a 1.2-acre parcel at 5999 Franklin Road, a property that had limitations from a 2003 rezoning.
Philip Thompson, the county's director of planning, described the property's past restrictions—limited retail uses (oriental/Persian rugs, flooring, antiques), signage caps and a prohibition on off-premise signs—and said removal would be consistent with the corridor’s "core" future land use. "The use of the property will be restricted to the sale and storage of the following..." Thompson said when describing the earlier conditions, then noted the planning commission supports the removal. The property sits along a high-traffic segment of US-220, and Thompson said the change is in line with the county's land-use guidance.
A supervisor moved and the board approved the rezoning on a roll call; no members of the public spoke at the required public hearings and the Roanoke County Economic Development Authority endorsed the petition. County staff emphasized that removing proffers opens opportunities for redevelopment but does not itself approve a specific project or site plan.
