Council directs staff to explore foreclosure on three properties tied to abatement liens

Mayor Johann Wallace asked the council to consider moving forward on foreclosure for three properties where the Town has paid to remediate hazardous conditions: 217 Pima Street, 303 Apache Street, and 103 Tomahawk. Town Attorney Thomas Benavidez told the council foreclosure is a complicated process that will itself incur costs and that the properties may not be worth the expense of pursuing foreclosure.
Benavidez told the council the Town has already spent about $16,000 on remediation at 217 Pima over the years. After discussion about costs, process and likely value to the Town, the council voted to direct staff to explore possible foreclosure on the abatement liens; the motion, moved by Johann Wallace and seconded by Cynthia Butterworth, passed unanimously.
