Council signs on to Hancock County multi-hazard mitigation plan to preserve federal funding eligibility

Jack, representing the Emergency Operations Center and the surveyor's office, presented the Hancock County multi-hazard mitigation plan and urged the council to adopt a resolution endorsing the county-wide plan. He explained the plan is updated on a multi-year cycle and that communities that sign the plan are eligible for federal disaster funding if a federal disaster declaration occurs. "If you don't sign on to it, then you're not eligible for federal funds," Jack said, urging the council to adopt the measure to keep Fortville eligible.
Council members moved and approved the resolution by voice vote and the chair asked all members to sign; staff said the plan will be circulated and re-evaluated in future cycles. Jack noted the plan's two major concerns for the county were tornadoes and hazardous-waste incidents (including a recent lithium-ion battery fire on a train), and he said participation allows coordinated mitigation and access to federal grants.
