Geneseo cancels planned D.C. trip for 8th graders; staff pursue Niagara Falls option to reduce family costs

District staff (Director, speaker 6) said declining enrollment on the planned Washington, D.C. 8th-grade trip forced a reconsideration of the itinerary and cost model. Out of 70 eligible students, only 35 committed, the presenter said, and the trip’s per-student cost assumptions relied on higher participation.
"Out of the 70 students, only 35 students were able to commit to that," the presenter said. He noted the initial per-student cost estimate of $469 was based on an assumption of about 45 participating students and that reduced participation would have raised the per-student cost by roughly $100. After reviewing costs and participation, the district decided to explore a Niagara Falls trip that staff said would require little to no out-of-pocket cost for students through fundraising and support from the Geneseo Community Education Foundation (GCEF).
Staff emphasized they will continue to collect surveys and data about student interest for future trips and that this year's choice was aimed at increasing accessibility and lowering the financial barrier for families.
