Plan Commission recommends Northwestern Medicine St. George Cancer Institute for final review

Dan Callahan, director of planning and construction at Northwestern Medicine, described a proposed St. George Cancer Institute to be built adjacent to the existing Orland Park campus that would include radiation oncology, diagnostic imaging, linear accelerators and an on-site cyclotron for isotope production. "We are here to introduce the Northwestern Medicine St. George Cancer Institute in Orland Park," Callahan said, calling the project a regional destination with cutting-edge therapies.
Architects and engineers presented a three-story, ~150,650-square-foot medical office building and a 4-level parking garage with approximately 490 spaces. The petitioner requested PUD amendments, a special use to allow building within 50 feet of a non-jurisdictional wetland (seeking a reduction to a 30-foot buffer), a 1-foot-6-inch height exception for equipment spaces and a 1-foot increase for rooftop mechanical screening; staff recommended approval with conditions for landscaping, detention-area maintenance access and design refinements. Commissioners asked detailed questions about driveway geometry, left-turn queuing on 153rd Street, handicap parking and long-term appearance of the west garage elevation; traffic and civil consultants said queuing and detention were addressed and that county permits may be needed for right-of-way work. The commission voted unanimously to forward the staff recommendation to the Board of Trustees.
