Developer pitches battery storage site in South Chicago Heights; trustees cite safety and land-use questions

Representatives from Turning Point Energy told the Village of South Chicago Heights Board of Trustees that they are evaluating an 8-acre parcel for a battery energy storage facility and that the project would occupy a portion of the site. Carol Price said the developer would use "2.8 acres of the 8-acre land they potentially will buy." Mayor Terry Matthews invited the presentation and trustees reviewed a slide overview of the proposed site layout and the batteries' intended role for the power grid.
Trustees and staff pressed for more information about safety and long-term land use. Village Attorney Matt Welch said the village needs to research how the tax assessor will treat the equipment and whether state rules cited by the presenters would affect local permitting. Board members voiced concerns about hazards from the batteries, security around the facility and fencing for the site. The board did not take action; Mayor Matthews said the trustees and village attorney will research the issues and discuss the proposal at a future meeting.
