DPW director credited after resident found with stroke; fire department reports two structure fires

Fire Chief Chad Vlietstra reported two recent emergency responses and credited a village public-works employee with saving a resident’s life. On Feb. 12, DPW Director Mark Martin found a 29th Street resident lying in the backyard who had suffered a stroke; Chief Vlietstra said Martin’s timely discovery allowed transport to the hospital and likely altered the outcome. Vlietstra asked trustees to note the department’s appreciation for the intervention.
Chief Vlietstra also said the department later returned to the same 29th Street residence for a structure fire connected to electrical work the resident had been doing, and separately responded to a structure fire on Deerpath in which the homeowner’s daughter was severely injured. In both fires, the chief reported that damage was primarily smoke-related. Deputy Chief Jessie Kozinski relayed that the man’s ex-wife had called to pass along thanks to Director Martin.
