President Holifield urges pre-authorized budget for feeding officers after manhunt; Auditor and counsel note formal protocol

President Steve Holifield told the board that during a recent manhunt the county hosted in excess of 100 law enforcement officers and that he helped arrange meals for them, saying only a few hundred dollars were needed to feed officers who were protecting the county. "We had in excess of over 100 law enforcement officers here Friday...we were only looking for a few hundred dollars to feed some law enforcement officers," Holifield said.
County Attorney Guy DiMartino reminded the board that ordinances generally require money to go before the body to spend and that such expenditures should be ratified in the meeting record. Commissioner Joe Haney said he asked EMA Director Rob Sabie to include an estimated $2,000 line in the EMA budget to allow similar spending in the future; Auditor Mike Rosenbaum said the Sheriff's office could have provided food and emphasized following established protocol in crisis situations. The board did not adopt a policy at the meeting but discussed adding budget authority for EMA.
