The Historic Resources Commission of the City of Albany on Monday reviewed concept plans for 44 Spring Street, a former residence converted to a garage in the early 20th century. Chair John Myers opened the meeting and introduced applicant James Brown, who said he intends to renovate the second floor into a private guest suite and restore carriage‑house features on the front facade while preserving evidence of the building's garage conversion.
Brown summarized historical evidence from Sanborn maps and on‑site fabric and described proposed exterior work including reducing the garage opening to add a left‑side door and internal staircase, reinstalling an upper transom, adding shutters, replacing three second‑floor windows and repainting the painted brick in a historically sympathetic color. "The intention here is to, more or less restore the building to an appropriate condition for the Italianate home that it was," Brown said. Commissioners repeatedly requested a single, accurate elevation or manufacturer photo of the selected overhead door treated visually as a hinged carriage door, and written mounting details for the proposed light fixtures so conduit can be routed through mortar and not fastened into brick.
Because this was a concept review the commission did not take a formal vote; members recorded recommendations for clearer door drawings, a mounting‑profile clarification requested by Commissioner Tobin and historically appropriate mortar for any masonry repairs. The applicant said he will revise the elevation, work with staff on the public‑notice packet and return materials reflecting the commission’s suggestions.
