The Mark West Union School District board on April 8 received an update from Superintendent Dr. Rachel Valenzuela about considering a 7th-grade expansion at Mark West Charter School for the 2025–2026 school year. Valenzuela said the district conducted a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) analysis and surveyed current families; some current 6th-grade families and incoming 5th-grade families indicated interest.
Valenzuela told trustees that parents raised practical concerns including sports offerings, construction needs and available space, and that "additional steps need to be taken before a final decision is made." No motion or timeline for a decision was adopted at the meeting; the matter remains under study and will require resolution of facilities and program issues before any expansion is approved.
