Eureka proclaims U.S. Coast Guard Month; Sector Humboldt Bay praised for rescues and aid

Mayor Kim Burghau read a city proclamation on Aug. 4 recognizing August 2026 as U.S. Coast Guard Month and celebrating Eureka’s 26th year as an official Coast Guard city.
A Sector Humboldt Bay representative thanked the council for the recognition and outlined recent operations: "In the last year, the women and men of Sector Humboldt Bay have prosecuted a 159 search and rescue cases, saved 28 lives, and assisted a 198 others," the representative said, and described recent medevac operations to local hospitals. The speaker also highlighted the Coast Guard’s local ties, noting service members, spouses and children living in the region and attending Eureka schools.
The proclamation cited the Coast Guard’s founding (Aug. 4, 1790) and noted Eureka’s decades‑long partnership with Sector Humboldt Bay, thanking service members and families and urging continued community support.
