The Eureka City Council on Aug. 4 adopted a resolution confirming final delinquent transient‑occupancy tax (TOT) assessments for noncompliant vacation‑rental operators, following repeated notice and opportunities for payment. Director Millar said the city has recovered roughly $247,000 since the enforcement program began.
Millar explained the city uses a vendor to identify addresses and rental activity, and staff coordinate across finance, planning, building, code enforcement and the city attorney’s office to notify operators and offer payment plans. "Owners, operators on exhibit a did not respond to noticing, or they stopped communicating with us," Millar said; the council approved certifying the remaining assessed properties to the county tax rolls after staff removed one parcel from the submission list because it is being addressed through alternative means.
The resolution passed on a unanimous vote of members present. Staff noted certification places assessments on property tax rolls for collection and is a last‑resort remedy after outreach and payment plans.
