The McFarland City Council formally proclaimed May 2026 as Community Action Month and invited Susanna Magana, health nutrition director for the Community Action Partnership of Kern, to brief the council on the agency’s work in the area.
Magana said the organization’s food bank distributed “right around 22,000,000 pounds of food” last year and that local partners handle the final distribution in McFarland, delivering roughly 500,000 pounds locally. She described the 211 resource line as a 24/7 connection for residents seeking social services and outlined an energy program that offers utility assistance and home weatherization to lower bills.
Magana also highlighted the agency’s migrant childcare program, which she said serves farmworking families who follow seasonal crops across the state. She said the program participates with about 24 childcare providers locally and estimated that the program pumps “approximately $1,500,000” into the local economy through provider services. The presentation emphasized the statewide network of agencies and asked residents to use local partners and the 211 line when they need services.
Council members thanked Magana and said they would forward the information to constituents. There was no council debate or vote on funding during the meeting; the item was a proclamation and informational presentation.
