Google outlines SPP strategy and 24/7 carbon-free energy goal, acknowledges short-term reliability challenges

Chris Matos, who leads Google's long-term energy strategy for the Central U.S., told the Resilient Lincoln roundtable that Google covers "100% of the power we use" and described contractual arrangements with Lincoln Electric System (LES) and sourcing through the SPP market. Matos said Google pairs utility-provided power with company-sourced generation and highlighted two wind projects — a 225-megawatt Great Western Wind project and a 198-megawatt Blue Storm Wind project — that serve the site’s load.
Responding to a resident's question citing reporting about on-site natural gas generation and CO2 emissions, Matos said the company's long-term "moonshot" is a 24/7 carbon-free energy (CFE) approach that aims for hourly matching of consumption with carbon-free resources and that the company continues to procure renewables and storage in the interim. "Between now and then, we maintain also our commitments to expanding and procuring additional, renewable and carbon free energy resources through a mix of wind, solar, and storage," Matos said. He also noted the company is exploring technology-agnostic options, including investments in carbon capture and sequestration for some interim needs.
Matos described a strategy of bringing generation into the SPP footprint and sometimes pre-positioning generation ahead of consumption to support grid reliability and market price effects. He said solar is part of the long-term portfolio but that in SPP the company presently leverages broader regional resources including wind, with solar expected to play a larger role later.
