Staff described two large red maples on the west end of the 15th Street Triangle that lack a clear central leader and have a ‘‘limby’’ canopy. Staff said the plan would be to remove the trees if necessary and plant a species more appropriate for the constrained site and adjacent roadway, prioritizing a tree with a smaller mature form and lower limb-failure risk. Board members asked about timing and incremental pruning options; staff said no removal was scheduled yet while the department explores whether incremental pruning could be effective.
