Roosevelt County adopts Stage One Fire Restrictions effective July 31

Roosevelt County Commissioners adopted Resolution No. 2027-3 at a July 28 special meeting to establish a fire season and enact Stage One Fire Restrictions effective July 31, 2026. Commissioner Marottek moved to approve the resolution and Commissioner Oelkers seconded; the motion passed unanimously.
Commissioner Gordon Oelkers cited County Fire Warden Mike Olson's recommendation, noting dry conditions, increased fire danger and limited firefighting resources. The minutes state: "Stage One Fire Restrictions will suspend the county burn permit system and prohibit open burning and open flames, including burn barrels, until further notice." Exemptions listed in the resolution include small campfires in approved locations, devices using liquid petroleum or LPG that can be turned on and off within cleared areas, activities authorized by posted written notice, official firefighting activity, and lands within city boundaries.
The resolution also asks residents to mow dry grass and create a 30-foot firebreak around homes to aid firefighters. It remains in effect until the board rescinds or modifies it. The resolution text was entered into the minutes and signed by Presiding Officer Robert Toavs and County Clerk Tracy Miranda.
