A United Nations agency official told the Security Council that the humanitarian situation in South Sudan remains "extremely concerning," reporting that violence from January to June displaced more than 420,000 people, primarily in Jonglin. The official also said South Sudan is hosting approximately 1,400,000 people fleeing the conflict in Sudan, placing additional pressure on national capacities and humanitarian services.
The official warned that these displacements compound food insecurity and increasingly constrained humanitarian access. "Civilians continue to pay the highest price," the agency official said, noting losses of lives, homes and livelihoods. The briefing linked the displacement figures to threats to the political transition and to preparations for the December elections, and called for international support to bolster protection and assistance.
