Director reports smaller caseload and new TeachTown curriculum for special education
Summary
Director of Student Services Tamara Slate reported 184 eligible special-education students (nine pending assessments), program counts by campus, adoption of the TeachTown curriculum for moderate-to-severe classes, and planned CPI training in October through Lake County SELPA.
Tamara Slate, director of student services for Middletown Unified, briefed the board on the district's special-education programs and upcoming training.
Slate said, "Our current special education students, we have a 184 that are eligible, and we have 9 that are pending initial assessments." She described program rosters by campus, noted the district has contracted with TeachTown for moderate-to-severe curricula, and said all special-day-class teachers will receive training and fidelity support through TeachTown. Slate also announced a Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training in October open to special-education teachers and paraeducators, hosted by the Lake County SELPA.
Board members asked no further questions; staff said the professional-development offerings and curricular changes were designed to improve instructional consistency and supports for students with disabilities.
