McFarland proclaims National Police Week and names police chaplain
Summary
The council proclaimed May 10–16 as National Police Week, Chief Adrian Holmes spoke about officer fatalities nationwide, and the council and chief introduced Pastor Tony Blanco as the McFarland Police Department chaplain and administered an oath.
Mayor Saul Leon read a proclamation recognizing National Police Week and asked residents to join in honoring law enforcement service. Chief Adrian Holmes addressed the council and described the difficulty of officer line‑of‑duty deaths, saying that historically about 100–150 officers die nationwide each year and that in recent years more fatalities have resulted from felonious assaults than traffic incidents.
Chief Holmes introduced Pastor Tony Blanco as the department's police chaplain and outlined the chaplain's role in providing spiritual guidance and support to officers, families and victims. The council administered an oath and Pastor Blanco offered brief remarks about his commitment to serve the department and community.
Councilmembers thanked officers for their service and applauded the new chaplain and other department staff who attended the meeting.
