Skokie SD 69 expands Foundations behavior training and adopts STOIC classroom framework

Sarah Kalinowski, Related Services Coordinator, described year-one Foundations work implemented in 2023-24 (Safe and Civil Schools) and reported that building teams will continue implementation and review during the 2024-25 school year. She said teams prioritized Tier 1 social-emotional learning and behavior and use continuous improvement cycles to set goals and update procedures.
Kalinkowski told the Board that school teams will use three common words districtwide for PreK-8: "kindness, perseverance, and respect." She also introduced the STOIC framework (Structure, Teach, Observe, Interact positively, and Correct fluently) as a research-based set of principles to support classroom management and more consistent problem-solving across buildings.
District leaders said training and dedicated early-release time will support staff implementation; building-level action plans and common area expectations will be reviewed during opening Institute Day activities.
