Council accepts Edward Byrne JAG grant to buy utility task vehicle for public safety

The Wyoming City Council voted to accept a 2025 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) and authorize purchase of a utility task vehicle for the police department.
Mayor Brett Howard read the budget impact: "The grant will provide 33,574. The total purchase is $38,003.87," leaving a remaining balance of $4,813 to be paid from the police department's existing capital outlay budget. A public safety representative told the council the award notice had just arrived and that, without action tonight, logistics would likely prevent acquiring and deploying the vehicle in time for the Metro Cruise event later this month.
Council member Postma moved to accept the grant and purchase the vehicle, with support from Council member Arnoise. The motion passed 5-1 (Council member Hill opposed). Council members said they supported the expedited schedule because the vehicle expands patrol capability on trails and at large community events. Staff noted the purchase will be used beyond Metro Cruise for patrols on several miles of trails.
