County updates paving schedule, warns of ALDOT project cost overruns and local striping needs

The county's roads director told commissioners that paving and milling crews are active across the south end of St. Clair County and that several contracts and projects are moving toward bid openings.
"We're looking probably around 300, 350,000 extra on this," the roads director said of expected change orders tied to poor soil and riprap requirements on an ALDOT eight-TRIP project, noting the state pays its share and the county would be responsible for its local portion and 20% of overruns.
Residents and commissioners also raised safety concerns about faded striping and missing pavement markings on several county roads. One resident said she had been run off the road twice in a week where vehicles drift onto the shoulder and there are no center or edge stripes.
The director said striping and pavement markers are a separate contract from resurfacing and described typical per-mile costs for center and edge line work. Commissioners said they will review crews' schedules and budget lines and attempt to prioritize dangerous stretches for striping ahead of the next paving cycle.
Roads staff also reported upcoming bid openings for creek cleanup and an equipment storage building and described local engineering costs for a TRIP project near Coosa Valley Elementary that will require a local funding share.
