Parents press Eden Central to preserve German program; district says it will post vacancy

Several parents addressed the board during public comment to ask that the district preserve German instruction after the current teacher's retirement. Catherine Schneider said she works in the district, has children in the district and "really want[s] to encourage our district to continue to offer this if possible," adding that German "is a program that's dying off" and that it sets the district apart.
Jessica Antonik, a parent of a current seventh-grader in German, urged the district to post the vacancy immediately and consider partnerships with local universities or long-term substitutes who meet state qualifications. "Please post the vacancy. Start the process. Get it moving so that we can have hope for this program," Antonik said. Superintendent (speaker 12) responded that the district will post the position and "we will do our absolute best," but cautioned that recruiting certified specialists is difficult and that which language can be maintained depends on the applicant pool and certification.
