Board approves multiple hires and affirms disciplinary appeal

At the Oct. 2 meeting the board approved multiple personnel recommendations, including ancillary staff positions, new educational assistants (EAs) to meet students' IEP needs, and an interpreter for deaf and hard-of-hearing students. Director explained some hires are required by students’ existing IEPs and the district expects to absorb initial costs within the budget but may need a future budget amendment.
A motion to affirm a disciplinary appeal was carried by unanimous vote; the board had the options to affirm, overturn, or grant a hearing and elected to affirm. Board members asked for clarity on staffing ratios and emphasized legal obligations for 1:1 supports when specified in an IEP. "A lot of times what we're seeing with IEPs... these students need a 1 to 1," staff said, explaining why positions are being added.
All personnel items and the disciplinary appeal vote passed 7-0. Staff will proceed with onboarding and will inform the board if a budget amendment becomes necessary.
