Wilson County schools organize disaster-relief drive for communities hit by Hurricane Helene

The Wilson County School Board voted unanimously on Oct. 2 to support a districtwide disaster-relief drive for areas affected by Hurricane Helene. Director (addressed by the chair) said schools were closed Sept. 27 because of the forecast and outlined plans for collection and delivery: drop-off times at the ATC, coordination by the textbook coordinator and box-truck transport to impacted counties.
Miss McCamey, a virtual/business teacher and FBLA advisor at BTA, told the board FBLA will lead the student-centered effort and encouraged community support. "FBLA is 100% behind it," she said. She described the storm’s scale—citing a social-media figure that “it dumped 41,000,000,000,000 gallons”—and urged donations; the board noted that figure was from social media and may not be independently verified. The director said the drive will target Carter County and Johnson County, with collections scheduled Oct. 3–9 and logistics handled by district maintenance once items are gathered.
The board encouraged both in-kind and financial donations, noting that cash can be easier for warehouses and distribution partners to use. The district will publicize drop-off locations and contact information on a flyer and via a district release.
