District previews rezoning plan as Wilson County enrollment tops 20,700; public meeting set for Sept. 12

Wilson County Schools leadership told the board that district enrollment is about 20,740 (pre-K–12, as of Aug. 23) — up roughly 312 students since the end of last school year — and described a proposed rezoning tied to two new elementary schools intended to rebalance capacity. Staff said LaGuardia (Lagardo) Elementary (sometimes referred to as LaGuardia/Lagardo in materials) would affect Stoner Creek and West Elementary and that maps and capacity stats will be available at an informational meeting on Sept. 12 at Mount Juliet High School.

Staff cautioned that rezoning is politically sensitive but necessary given growth in specific subdivisions; the presentation stressed the goal of keeping subdivisions whole and maximizing building-program capacity to avoid frequent emergency shifts. The director and planning staff said they would accept public feedback at the Sept. 12 meeting and follow that with recommended boundary changes to the board at a later date. The board also discussed feeder patterns and potential timing for rezoning related to new school openings and the Central Pike Elementary contract and expected preconstruction schedule.
