Committee Told Names May Come From Community, Street or Local Leaders

Under Policy 3.210, schools may be named for the area/community, a well-known street, or local leaders with outstanding contributions; the committee was given a list of submitted names and asked to seek wider input before making a recommendation.
During the policy review, Lutrell read the district’s naming criteria aloud and described acceptable bases for a school name: the area or community where the school is located, a well-known street bordering the site, or a local leader who has made an outstanding contribution to education or the community. “The criteria that the board has put in the policy is schools shall be named for ... the area or community in which the school is located, or ... the street on which the school is located ... or local leaders who have made an outstanding contribution,” he said.
Committee members examined an initial list of submitted names (many repeats such as Central Pike, Central, Wilson Central) and discussed whether the neighborhood identifies as part of “the Glade.” Members agreed the list should be a starting point and that more stakeholder input should be solicited, especially from residents who live in the attendance zone.
