Committee Reviews Process for Naming New Central Pike Elementary

Jeff Lutrell, director of schools, opened the meeting and reviewed the district’s naming policy, telling the committee that naming decisions ultimately rest with the Board of Education. “The name of the school system is the responsibility of the Board of Education by majority vote,” he said.
Lutrell walked members through Policy 3.210, which lists acceptable naming criteria—community/area, a well-known street bordering the site, or local leaders who have made outstanding contributions to education or the community. He explained that the director appoints a committee of staff, patrons and the board member from the zone and that ‘‘names for consideration may be submitted by any citizen, board member, or school personnel.’’ The committee’s written recommendation on name, colors and mascot, with supporting documentation, will be submitted to the director for a formal recommendation to the Board of Education.
The committee discussed the practical limits of naming tied to feeder patterns and zoning changes and agreed the committee should solicit broader stakeholder input before finalizing recommendations. Lutrell said he will present the committee’s recommendation to the board once the group completes its work.
