The Beecher CUSD 200U Board of Education voted May 13 to approve a districtwide cell-phone policy and related student handbook updates as submitted, including an amendment proposed by high-school administrator Mike Meyer to streamline consequences.
Meyer described the revised consequences as a three-step process: a teacher warning, teacher confiscation with the student retrieving the phone at the end of the school day, and the dean handling further follow-up. "The 2nd step now will be the teacher will confiscate the phone, they will take it to the office, they will pick the student will pick it up at the end of the day," Meyer said. Superintendent Dr. Gay Ham clarified that the policy and handbook changes were discussed at the policy meeting and would proceed through the district's two-reading process where required. The board approved the policy and handbook amendments by roll-call vote.
The board also clarified operational details: elementary and junior high students will continue to store phones in lockers; high-school staff may use a classroom 'black box' system to hold phones during academic time. Exceptions for curricular activities (for example, BBTV production or teacher-approved use in physical education) were noted and will require teacher permission. The board scheduled a second reading of any remaining handbook items at the June meeting when final adoption is expected.
