The Mesquite Independent School District Board of Trustees voted unanimously July 13 to non‑renew the term contract of Alec (Alex) Johnson following a board hearing that included a closed‑session review of student‑identifying exhibits.
Board legal counsel Andrea Mooney presided over the hearing. Administration counsel objected to conducting the proceeding in open session, saying multiple exhibits contained student‑identifiable information that could not be redacted without losing meaning and cited Texas Government Code section 551.0821 and FERPA considerations. The board moved into closed session under sections 551.074, 551.071 and 551.0821 of the Texas Government Code and Texas Education Code section 21.207.
After returning to open session late, a trustee moved to non‑renew Mr. Johnson's term contract; the board recorded a 7‑0 vote. Counsel stated the board's decision is final, will be memorialized in written notice consistent with board policy DFBB(Local), and that the employee may appeal to the commissioner of education within 20 days of receipt of written notice. "The decision of the board is final and is not subject to rehearing," counsel stated during the meeting.
