Mesquite ISD board approves schematic designs for six elementary campus upgrades

The Mesquite Independent School District Board of Trustees voted unanimously July 13 to approve schematic designs for six elementary‑school projects that the district said will modernize building systems and add storm shelters.

District project staff and WRA Architects presented the phase‑2 renovations for Bridal, Galloway and Hodges and additions at Smith, Thompson and Perrong. Presenters said the work will include mechanical and electrical replacements, expanded fire protection and fire‑alarm systems, roofing replacements, and new ICC‑500 storm shelters at sites where additions are planned. "We're presenting tonight the schematic design," the presenter said during the presentation.

Board members asked site‑specific questions, including whether the shelters would accommodate campus enrollment. Presenters confirmed shelters are sized to campus TEA capacity. The administration said it plans to issue design documents in October and return with a December guaranteed maximum price, with early work and heavy construction scheduled for summer 2027 and a two‑year cycle for some projects stretching into summer 2028.

The board approved the package by voice vote, with President Robert Seward announcing the motion passed 7‑0. The projects are intended to reduce long‑term maintenance needs and improve life‑safety systems, district staff said. Cost and GMP figures will be brought back to the board in the December procurement update.
