Board approves rezoning for new Williams High School: Option 4, open 9–11 with UIL legacy allowed

After a months‑long attendance boundary process, the Lamar Consolidated ISD Board of Trustees approved the attendance boundary committee’s Option 4 for Secondary Complex 8 on May 19.
Enrollment management presented three rezoning options and the ABC submitted an additional Option 4 that used newly created elementary zones to minimize split elementary assignments and balance campus enrollments. Parent ABC representatives Stephanie Waddell and Kayla Florence described the ABC’s unanimous recommendation and emphasized the committee’s focus on keeping neighborhoods and feeder patterns intact when possible.
Trustees debated whether the new high school should open with grades 9–11 (allowing current seniors to remain) and whether UIL legacy provisions should be included. Coach Gabbard summarized legacy criteria used in prior openings: students who earned varsity letters or advanced to regionals—depending on activity—may be eligible but must provide their own transportation. Trustee Welch moved to approve Option 4 with Williams opening as grades 9–11 and with the UIL legacy provision; Trustee Marsters seconded. The motion passed unanimously, 7–0.
