Board selects rezoning option for Becerra and Adams elementary schools, vote splits 5-1

Trustees voted 5-1 to adopt administration's recommended rezoning plan (Option 2) for Becerra and Adams elementary schools while allowing a 4th-grade legacy for current fourth graders. The Attendance Boundary Committee had recommended Option 2B for 2027-28; trustees and committee members debated tradeoffs between short-term relief for overcrowded campuses and projections of future growth in developing areas.

Enrollment staff reviewed multiple map options and survey results (initial outreach to over 1,800 email addresses; first survey yield 119 responses, ~6% response rate; second survey 82 responses, ~4% response rate for the ABC-created option). ABC representatives said their work focused on keeping neighborhoods intact and minimizing repeated moves. Trustees probed the projected utilization rates, concerns about future under- or over-enrollment (noting new development and land availability), and options such as portables or cap-and-overflow should a campus go over capacity. After discussion Trustee Welch moved to approve Option 2 for both years with a 4th-grade legacy; Trustee Box seconded and the motion passed 5-1 (Trustee Royce opposed).
