Board establishes fiduciary fund to receive pooled donations for county schools

The Mendocino County Board of Education voted to establish a fiduciary fund intended to hold and pass through donor contributions for county public schools. Chair called the motion to adopt Resolution 24.12 0.1 and the board approved it by voice vote.
Heather, a staff member who presented the item, said the fund will allow the county office to account separately for contributions tied to a trademarked program. "The idea behind the school's rule is actually a trademarked name," Heather said, citing that the mark is owned by the Marin County Office of Education and that Sonoma County has joined a shared model. Heather said the funds would be pooled and distributed every fall to school districts, charter schools and other public schools on a per‑student (ADA) basis and that the board would receive an informational report each year showing totals and distributions.
Board members asked how awards would be administered and whether interest would remain in the fund; Heather and staff said distributions are uniform (not targeted to individual schools) and that any interest would be included in the total amount passed through. A board member moved to adopt the resolution and the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.
