Arlington ISD staff recommend considering closure and repurposing of Blanton Elementary; public meetings set

Deputy Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Collins told the Arlington ISD Board of Trustees that a fall 2025 Facilities Condition Assessment identified the majority of Blanton Elementary as needing significant repair and that the campus has experienced declining enrollment and underperformance relative to peer schools.
"The deadline to report a final decision for campus closure to the Texas Education Agency (TEA) is January 31," Collins said, and she outlined next steps the district will take to gather community input. The district will launch a website with condition and enrollment information, hold a community meeting at Blanton Elementary on Wednesday, Jan. 14, and use the Let's Talk platform for family questions and feedback.
Collins said staff will review students enrolled in special programs on an individual basis to determine appropriate placements and partner with families to address needs including transportation. Trustees asked staff to continue dialogue and provide opportunities for community input as staff compile placement options and more detailed assessments of repair costs and timelines.
No formal motion to close Blanton was taken at the Jan. 8 meeting. Administration described the presentation as a recommendation to consider closure and repurposing of the original building for another district use; staff said they will return with findings after community engagement and internal reviews ahead of the TEA reporting deadline.
Next steps: the district will hold the Jan. 14 community meeting, continue individualized reviews for students in special programs, and gather feedback through the website and Let's Talk. A final decision, if any, is expected to be reported to TEA by Jan. 31.
